Description: Credits The programme contains biographical notes on the director and relays the important news item that Visconti had a stroke during the shooting of the film and will stay half-paralysed. It describes the historical framework for LUDWIG: an account of 19th-century Germany through the tragic story of a king doomed by insanity. The same story also inspired an earlier film, Helmut Kouder's German production "Red Rose". The programme comments on the 5-hour German-French-Italian epic production, that is, the crowing ceremony of young Ludwig II of Bavaria, at the Munich Palace, set in Visconti's all-pervasive ambience, a perfect blend of opera, theatre and cinema. The storyline is about the 20-year old chief protagonist, who "has no regard for state affairs" and gets lost in his flight of fantasy and Wagner's music. The programme traces the steps of the romantically insane king until his mysterious drowning. It also stresses that Visconti "shines light" on the hero's "pessimism and existential melancholy", mostly through his nearest connections. The programme concludes with a note about the acting of R. Schneider and H. Berger, Visconti's favourite actor, who will also appear in "Cursed".
